Technical Laboratory Assistant
Health Sciences - HHPR
12 Month Regular

The technical lab assistant provides support and general management for the School of Health Sciences teaching labs.  Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the various program labs.  Duties include maintaining medical supplies and equipment inventories; maintenance and repair of equipment; maintaining laboratory schedules; obtaining medical supplies for laboratory instructors; preparing labs for medical procedures to include simulation labs; putting away supplies and equipment when labs are finished; and ensures compliance with lab safety and hazardous waste procedures.  Assists the Lab manager with equipment and supply prices, schedule changes, and other duties as assigned. 

  • Prepare supply carts and rooms for all labs and simulation, including manikins, models and equipment.  The setting up of manikins can consist of inserting IV's, naso gastric tubes, gastric tubes, urinary catheters, chest tubes, moulage manikins and manikin intubation.  Set-up and manipulate IV pumps and oxygen cylinders.  Set up and clean up supplies and equipment when labs are completed.  Ensure labs are clean, neat and safe.
  • Identify and recommend need for purchasing of medical equipment and supplies as replacement and/or additions as needed.  Research new supplies and/or equipment requested by faculty.  Contact vendors for competitive quotes for supplies and/or equipment.  Maintain catalogs containing most current medical equipment and supplies.  Communicate with Assets Management regarding inventory and disposal of equipment.  File equipment disposal forms.  Insure that inventory asset tags are placed on new equipment and added to our inventory.
  • Gather and dispose of bio-medical hazardous materials.  Assist lab instructors with resources regarding equipment and supplies for labs.  Assist the instructors with technical issues with equipment and/or simulation manikins.  Perform minor maintenance and repairs on equipment and/or manikins as needed.  Contact equipment/manikin vendor for routine and urgent repairs.  Conduct inventory and request replacement of supplies, equipment and/or manikins to the Lab Manager.  Assume responsibility for keeping medical laboratory equipment in working order.
  • Work independently, make necessary job related decisions to benefit student and faculty needs.  Assist in maintaining master schedule of Health Sciences's labs accommodating changes throughout the semester.  Communicate effectively with faculty regarding room schedule changes.
  • Obtain updated supply and equipment lists from faculty each semester.  Organize the storage and placement of medical supplies and equipment to maximize the efficiency of use, to include moving and lifting simulation manikins, for use in specific labs.  Dismantle and store medical equipment and/or manikins upon completion of the lab.  Assist the Radiologic Technology Department with the management student and faculty radiation badges.
  • Maintain inventory of existing medical equipment and medical supplies, maintain library of existing warranties, product manuals, and other relevant materials.  Assess medical equipment and supply inventory on a yearly basis and make recommendations for disposal of outdated or dysfunctional items as necessary.  Check out equipment to faculty and/or staff, record transaction and ensure items are returned within stated period of time.  Provide tours of Health Sciences facility and proctor tests for instructors as needed.
  • Assemble, check and put new medical equipment and supplies into service.  Communicate with faculty and staff about available new equipment.  Arrange in-services as needed for staff and faculty on new equipment.

A minimum of a High School degree and four (4) years of relevant work experience.

Proficient knowledge of healthcare materials, supplies, equipment, technology and computer software.

Ability to work a flexible 40 hour weekly schedule to accommodate the needs of the lab schedule.

Ability to lift, bend, stoop.

Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time.

Ability to work independently and prioritize work duties and responsibilities.

Ability to work effectively and tactfully with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and the public.

This position requires an individual with excellent time management, organizational skills and good customer service.


Health care degree or certification (for example: RN, LPN, Paramedic.)

Prior work in Healthcare.
